Teacher Education for Equity and Sustainability

TEESNet, formally known as the UK Teacher Education Network for education for sustainable development and global citizenship, evolved from collaboration with World Wide Fund for Nature UK, Oxfam and teacher educators. In the UK, environmental and development NGOs have been in the forefront of promoting and supporting Education for sustainable development (ESD). The Network has representation from nearly all UK providers of teacher education including School Centred Initial Teacher Training institutions (SCITTs) and further education, NGOs, subject associations, national educational bodies including the University Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET), The Higher Education Academy, and Think-global. We currently have a membership of over 70 Teacher Education providers (many with 4-5 individual members), 42 NGOs and 10 national educational bodies.

Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship

Our Aims

  • To develop a UK wide community of practice in ESD/GC within Teacher Education (TE) in higher education and schools in order to share and disseminate good practice and to initiate and develop new understanding across the sector
  • Embedding ESD/GC in UK Teacher Education in relation to ethos, curriculum content, learning, teaching and assessment.
  • Encouraging and promoting research on sustainable development and global citizenship within TE, with particular emphasis on exploring its impact on student teachers, teachers and young people.

To meet these aims TEESNet has supported the development of regional networks and groups across the UK, organised conferences and created an interactive online forum space for our members. TEESNet has also made links with international networks engaged in similar areas, whilst contiuning to attend meetings with UK based educational bodies such as the TDA and the Department of Education. We continue to be committed to embedding radical practice underpinned by theory and to develop a genuine community of practice for those committed to ESD/GC.

The TEESNet Community

The TEESNet community offers an oppotunity for all of our members (industry experts, academic leads, student teachers and NGOs) to share and learn from cutting edge practice. The forum provides a space for individuals to network with colleagues across institutions and organisations in the UK and internationally, for the purpose of discussing policy, research and good practice. Through the community you can also develop an overview of current issues in ESD, as well as view specific events and training oppotunities.
