ALUN MORGAN Profile

Alun was born in Geneva, grew up in the English Midlands, has lived in various parts of Britain and also has a strong sense of Welsh identity all of which makes him a little bit confused (but in a good way).

He taught geography in England and Wales from 1988-1998 and during a secondment from teaching (1998-1999) he directed the Education Programme of Ecocentrig – the Cardiff Environmental Centre. From 1998-2002 he set up the post of Education for Sustainable Development Officer for Worcestershire County Council, the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. Alun then moved to the Institute of Education, University of London where he worked for a little over six years.  His main roles at IOE were Lecturer in Geography Education (teaching on the PGCE and MA courses) and Associate Director of the Development Education Research Centre.   In January Alun moved to London South Bank University to become the Co-Director of the MSc in Education for Sustainability Program. This represents a wonderful personal and professional ‘arc’ since he was part of the first cohort which undertook the MSc (then called Environmental and Development Education) from 1994 to 1997. Alun completed his Doctorate entitled ‘Minding the World’ in 2007 (ten years after completing the Masters and twenty years after qualifying as a teacher).

As might be expected from this career path Alun has a strong commitment to Environmental Education, Development Education, Education for Sustainability and Global Education/Citizenship. He is currently involved in a number of initiatives including ‘Through Other Eyes’; NCSL School Leadership for Sustainability; and the London RCE (Regional Centre for Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development)
