Advanced Numeracy for Teachers
(Level 3)

Standard course: full attendance at LSBU:

  • 15 weeks for ½ day Friday 4th March – 1st July 2011, 10:00 – 1:00pm

Blended programme: Partial attendance at LSBU:

  • 4th March 2011 - course induction - 11:00 am – 3:00pm
  • 1st July 2011 – tutorial and some assessment tasks.
  • Optional workshops at LSBU & Online Activities

This course aims to prepare participants for entry to numeracy specialist teacher training courses in particular Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (Numeracy), Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) and the Certificate in Lifelong Learning for adult Numeracy Specialists (Additional Diploma).

It is suitable for ESOL and literacy practitioners who may want to also teach numeracy; vocational tutors who need to improve their personal maths skills or applicants who need to brush up their maths before applying for an initial teacher training course.

Tutorial support will be arranged individually by telephone. Times for remote support from tutors will be available. The live chat and discussion forums are compulsory components of the course. Applicants need to make the time available and ensure they can access the internet.

Cost: The fee for learners is £420.

Measures, Shape and Space

  • A CPD event for anyone teaching numeracy in the Lifelong Learning Sector including all Skills for Life and vocational teachers looking to improve their teaching practice and maths skills.

What will I get from attending the event?

The chance to...

  • analyse skills and knowledge required to teach measures, shape and space effectively and identify any associated personal skills development needs
  • get ideas on creative use of resources and develop strategies for teaching measures, shape and space
  • design activities with contexts that are relevant for learners including the consideration of differentiation Is this course accredited?

This is a non-accredited session. Participants who attend the whole day will gain 5 hours towards the CPD required for QTLS. A certificate of attendance will be provided.

Cost: The fee is £160.00 per person.

This includes lunch, course materials and a free CD ROM.

Fractions, Decimals and Percentages (full day session)

  • This workshop is for participants to:
  • improve their own personal maths skills in relation to fractions, decimals and percentages
  • reflect on strategies for teaching fractions, decimals and percentages and related pedagogical issues

The session will consist of the following:

  • Sharing different methods for teaching fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Analysing common learner errors relating to fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Discussing strategies for teaching differentiated groups
  • Dealing with level 1 and 2 numeracy exam questions on fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Designing activities with real life contexts

The sessions will include making use of a variety of tactile and ICT resources in numeracy.

Cost: £180 per person for attendance of the whole day.

Two day MA modules...

...for the experienced practitioner to extend their knowledge and work towards a higher qualification. Three modules have an explicit Numeracy content: - Dyslexia and Mathematics - Language and Mathematics - Numeracy and Employment.

These modules will run as part of the blended MA programme, and will include some practical activities, as well as taking a critical view of the issues concerned to develop understanding at Master’s level. Each module is worth 20 credit points at M level on the CAT schedule.

Cancellation policy

If a booking is cancelled within 2 weeks of the event, a refund will be made, minus 20% of the full price as a cancellation charge. Bookings cancelled within 2 weeks of the event will not be refunded. Participants can swap their place with a colleague, as long as they inform LLU+ before the event.
