The Chancellor of London South Bank University, Sir Trevor McDonald OBE, was in Southwark Cathedral yesterday to confer Honorary Degrees and Fellowships at the University’s annual Honorary Awards Ceremony.
The ceremony recognises individuals who have made a unique and exceptional contribution to their field and it is the highest honour the University can give.
This year the graduands were:
Sandra Horley OBE - the Chief Executive of Refuge – the national domestic violence charity – Sandra Horley is committed to campaigning on behalf of abused women and lobbying for changes in legislation and policy. She has spent most of her career battling against prejudices and lack of understanding around domestic violence.
Dr Steven Curson - a recently retired General Practitioner who, over many years, was involved in pioneering work in health education and training while leading an award-winning Primary Care Centre in Southwark, the Princess Street Group Practice
Nitin Sawhney - an award-winning writer, world-class producer and songwriter, a DJ, orchestral composer, comedian, an actor and a cultural pioneer - Nitin Sawhney is one of the most influential and versatile creative talents in the UK today.
Sir Graeme Davies, FREng, FRSE - President and Vice Chancellor of the University of London. He has also held Vice Chancellor positions at the University of Liverpool and the University of Glasgow. He has been Chief Executive of the Universities Funding Council and the Polytechnics & Colleges Funding Council.
Cliff Holden - a painter of figures and landscapes and a designer, widely credited with having introduced screen-printing to Britain as a fine art form. He has paintings in the Tate Gallery, the Arts Council Collection and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. He conceived the idea of the Borough Group, which was set up to spread knowledge of David Bomberg‘s approach to art.
Dame Ruth Silver DBE - Principal and Chief Executive of Lewisham College in London and an adviser to the Select Committee in the House of Commons, Ruth Silver has worked in senior management in further education for fifteen years. Her career has spanned service in child guidance, in teaching and inspection, and in developing national education policy on personal effectiveness in young people.
Past recipients of these awards include Kevin Spacey (2005), Benjamin Zephaniah (2002), Sir Michael Caine (1994) and Reverend Desmond Tutu (1994).
Speaking on behalf of the graduands, Sir Graeme Davies thanked the University for enabling them to join the list of distinguished honoraries awarded in the past. He also spoke highly of the University’s long history of delivering professional education for students from diverse backgrounds.
